A Simple AM/PM Routine for Sensitive, Compromised Skin

If your skin feels tight, stingy, reactive, rough, or like it suddenly cannot tolerate products you used to use, it is usually a sign your barrier is compromised.

When that happens, the fastest way forward is almost never adding more. It is simplifying.

This is the exact routine framework I use when skin needs to calm down and rebuild strength. It is intentionally simple:

  • Cleanse

  • Repair

  • Hydrate and replenish

  • Protect

Step 1: Cleanse (less, but better)

Cleansing should never leave your skin feeling squeaky, tight, or stripped. If it does, it is not supporting barrier repair.

Morning cleanse: yes, I often recommend skipping it

This can feel controversial, but if your skin is very compromised and you are not actively breaking out, I often recommend skipping a morning cleanser for a period of time.

Instead:

  • Rinse with warm to tepid water

  • Pat dry gently

  • Move straight into repair and hydration

Why this helps: compromised skin often does better with fewer surfactants and less friction. This gives your barrier a chance to rebuild without being disrupted twice a day.

If you are acne-prone, this may look different. The goal is always to tailor the plan to your skin and what it is doing right now.

Evening cleanse: gentle balm or cream cleansers

At night, cleansing matters, especially if you wear SPF or makeup.

Choose a gentle balm or cream cleanser that melts away the day without stripping.

Product option:Lift Away Cleansing Balm

Step 2: Repair (anti-inflammatory, skin-strengthening only)

When skin is reactive, this is not the time for aggressive actives or complicated layering.

Repair means:

  • Calming inflammation

  • Supporting the barrier

  • Choosing ingredients that strengthen, not irritate

Look for products that feel soothing on contact and do not create tingling, heat, or stinging.

Product option:Rescue (Epidermal Repair Serum)

Step 3: Hydrate and replenish (nourish, do not overload)

Hydration is not just about adding water. Compromised skin usually needs support that helps it hold hydration and rebuild resilience.

Keep this step simple:

  • Choose straightforward formulas

  • Avoid constantly switching products

  • Give your skin time to respond

Product option:Peptide Powerhouse Moisturiser

If you are very dry or your skin feels worse overnight, a supportive night moisturiser can make a big difference while your skin does its repair work.

Product option:Nourish Avocado Facial Oil

Step 4: Protect (sun protection always)

If your skin is sensitive, inflamed, or healing, sun protection is non-negotiable.

Daily SPF helps:

  • Reduce inflammation triggers

  • Protect the barrier while it rebuilds

  • Prevent redness and post-inflammatory marks from lingering longer than they need to

Pro tip: multiuse products make sensitive skin routines easier

When skin is compromised, too many steps can be too much. Multiuse products reduce the number of layers and the number of variables.

A great example is Simka Day Cream, which can cover multiple steps in one.

What to avoid while your skin is compromised

If your goal is calm, these are the common things that slow repair:

  • Over-cleansing

  • Exfoliating acids and scrubs

  • Harsh acne products designed to dry out the skin

  • Constantly introducing new products

If you are not sure what to pause, start with this question:

Does it sting, tingle, burn, or leave my skin feeling tight?

If yes, it is usually not the right fit for compromised skin.

A gentle next step (if you want a personalised routine)

Sensitive skin can be dry, oily, acne-prone, rosacea-prone, or all of the above. So consider this routine a starting point.

If you want a plan that is tailored to your skin, lifestyle, and what is driving the inflammation, Skin Scripts (Online Consultation) is designed for exactly that. It takes the guesswork out and gives you a calm, barrier-first routine you can stick to.

With Skin Scripts, you’ll receive tailored recommendations, including access to professional-only and bespoke options (including Osmosis MD and Dermaviduals), where appropriate.
